Whiskey Jack & Friends Bring a Canadian Legend Roaring Back to Life
Toronto, Ontario - The Guess Who, Neil Young, The Tragically Hip... from a music standpoint, nothing much else screams Canada... unless of course your name is Tom Connors. If the name itself doesn't bring a Canadian smile to your face, then perhaps you are Gen Z. Wait... that's no excuse either! Just ask Will Sharp! The 24 year-old fan knows Stompin' Tom well!  There are anniversaries, and then there are moments that feel like the country itself is raising a glass. Stompin’ Tom Connors’ 90th Birthday Celebration at The Horseshoe Tavern was absolutely the latter. With Stompin' Tom's band Whiskey Jack, and a number of very special guests, it was a night where history, humour, and pure Canadian pride collided inside one of Toronto’s most storied rooms, to honour the country singer who left us far too soon.   The Horseshoe is no stranger to legends, but this one is different. Tom Connors was just 11 years old when the ’Shoe opened its doors, and decades later, his 1972 performance here became one of the venue’s most iconic live recordings. Walking in tonight, you could feel that history with the buzz in the air. The place was packed... not just busy, but shoulder-to-shoulder with fans dressed in full country gear. Including Will Sharp who made the trek from Manitoba. It's the kind of crowd I don’t typically see at the shows that I cover here in the TDot.  Canadian actor and comedian Sean Cullen kicked things off with a few jokes before leading the room into “O Canada,” exactly as Stompin’ Tom would have done ahead of his live shows. Every single person in the building sang... loud (as we love it), proud, and smiling. From there, Whiskey Jack launched straight into “Bud the Spud,” and the crowd didn’t miss a word. It quickly set the tone for the rest of the evening.  Fiddler Billy MacInnis took over on the second song "Maple Sugar". Man, that sound! It gives me a feeling of longing for my ancestry on Canada's East Coast, and McGinnis' voice blends perfectly with his instrument of choice. Then Duncan Fremlin on the banjo (another iconic stringed instrument that brings a smile to my face) followed with a tune introduced by the story of his “No 51st State” banjo.   With a few special guests promised on the bill, the first was "wild guitarist" Mike T. Kerr. Kerr stepped in and told the crowd that we had yet to hear a song about New Brunswick, a fact at which he immediately changed. The rumours of Kerr being able to make that acoustic sing were proven true. The cheers from the excited crowd were thunderous.   Amongst stories poking fun at Connors and how much he drank and smoked, the songs came as highlights of an unmatched career. “The Moonman Newfie” spiraled into a medley of the "Ketchup Song", “Goodnight Mirazha,” and “Tilsonburg”, the crowd practically shouting “TILSONBURG!” on cue. It was chaos in the best possible way possible as everybody inside the music venue was quickly having the time of their lives.   Duncan Fremlin then introduced the evening's second special guest as a last minute addition they “had to get before she got too famous.” Toronto's own Merideth Moon joined the band on stage. Her voice soared through two songs, including a gorgeous rendition of “Prairie Moon,” which she called her favourite Connors track. Not unlike Stompin' Tom's Canadian legacy, Moon's father is another extremely well known Canadian icon, one whom I also get chills thinking about. With Gordon Lightfoot's blood running through her veins, there is no wonder Moon's voice is so mesmerizing.   With the evening split into 2 sets, the first wound down with “Bar Hopping Spree in Sault Ste. Marie” which turned into a full-band workout, with banjo, fiddle, guitar, bass, and drum breaks earning applause mid-song. Sean Cullen returned for “Less I Know,” of which my eyes opened wide at the man's voice. I had heard him sing during Andy Kim's Christmas, but man, this one hit differently. This man can sing! And he enthralled the audience too as they belted along once again.  Then came the moment everyone was hoping for... good old birthday cake!!! How is a birthday party complete without it? The stage filled with the musicians of the evening, and the entire room clapped and sang “Happy Birthday” Whiskey Jack style... exactly the spirit of the night. After birthday cake, they closed the first half with “Sudbury Saturday Night,” and the room erupted before intermission.  The band returned with more Stompin' Tom Connors gold with tracks like “Goin’ to the Barn Dance Tonight,” and “Cross Canada,” where each member created a verse that meant something personal to them. “TTC Skedaddler” and “Snarly’s Hill” kept the energy high.    A comedic highlight came when Doug Cameron dropped to his knees. A fan climbed onstage to help him up, and the band jokingly asked for pills. Doug explained he’d just turned 70 and was suffering from the "OLD”... a Whiskey Jack original that had the crowd howling.   The third, and final guest of the evening was none other than Canadian country music royalty. Multi-JUNO winner and Prairie Oyster frontman, Russell DeCarle joined for “Gumboot Cloggeroo” and “Singin’ the Blues.” What a collection of musical talent that was assembled here. Fremlin announced that the band had partied with friends and fans each year, and the 80th birthday celebration 10 years ago was something special, but he proclaimed this 90th celebration to be the greatest one of all. I wasn't personally at either of the other shows, but I'll agree, this was something else!    And I know the crowd held my sentiment. They were having the time of their lives singing "Margo’s Cargo,” at the top of their lungs and then the inevitable eruption for “The Hockey Song.” The band barely needed microphones as the audience carried the vocal duties.   Whiskey Jack closed with “Stories and Songs,” drinks raised high, toasting the man who gave Canada its soundtrack.   This was a reminder of how deeply Stompin’ Tom Connors is woven into the fabric of this country. The jokes, the camaraderie, the singalongs, the sheer joy. It all felt like a room full of people celebrating an old friend.    What a celebration. What a crowd. What a night for Stompin’ Tom Connors! While the music wasn't "LOUD", the party was!!!

Whiskey Jack’s 25 year professional and personal relationship with Stompin’ Tom form the heart and soul of this show.  You will hear “Bud the Spud,” “Sudbury Saturday Night,” and “The Hockey Song” and if there’s a song about your community, you’ll hear that too.  Included will be songs written by Tom especially for this occasion:  Believe In Your Country, It’s Canada Day, Up Canada Way, C A N A D A, Unity and more.

He has made multiple appearances on The Tonight Show (NBC) and CBS’s The Late Late Show and has a number of his own specials including Comedy Central Presents, Comedy Now and was a finalist on NBC’s Last Comic Standing. Seán and Whiskey Jack began performing their unique brand of Canadian humour shortly after Tom died in 2013.  Their first show began with Sean telling the audience “Tom wrote songs about potatoes, tomatoes and tobacco but sadly, never about poutine”. Within minutes in front of a sold out crowd, he and the band created  I Love Poutine.  It brought the house down!

2025 Whiskey Jack tour is full of surprises

Here at Whiskey Jack head office, our attention spans are short but our summer tour is long.   The tour is called “CANADA - Believe In Your Country”.  We join millions of our fellow Canadians to make it clear that our sovereignty is sacred and we will not be messed with.

Our first show is this Thursday, June 26 at 7:30 PM and it's something different.  It's the seventh in a series called Sideroad Sessions, intimate gatherings for music and biographic chat.  The location is also a region of the city we don't get to often - 4480 Eglinton Avenue West (First Church of Christ, Scientist).  Here are the details.

Next up on Sunday June 29, the Ottawa Valley Stomp Music Festival has invited us to remember the music and patriotism of Canada's #1 troubadour, Stompin' Tom Connors.  We welcome 88 year old Gate Lepine, Stompin' Tom's best friend and songwriting partner, as he sings his French lyrics to Big Joe Mufferaw (Gros Jos Monferand).  First show is 11:30 AM.

The summer schedule continues with shows in Parry Sound (Stockey Centre) on July 8 followed by a series of Ontario Provincial Park appearances:  Killbear, Killarney, Grundy Lake, Pancake Bay, Marten River, Driftwood and Restoule.  Dates and times are listed here.  Warning...there will be dancing and songs about bugs.
In September, we will travel to British Columbia with Canadian comedian (no stranger to our stage), Sean Cullen.  Details on that tour will be available soon.

Oh, one more thing.  In 2026 we will return to the Horseshoe Tavern and the Academy Theatre in Lindsay, Meaford and more.  Just sayin'...

See you down the road.

Village Media beginning to dominate

Village Media is an online news site that serves many towns and cities in Canada.  I've been writing for them since 2009.

In anticipation of our show on June 4, 2025 at the Loft in Sault Ste. Marie, I was inspired to write a nostalgia piece when I woke up yesterday morning.   Around 9:30 AM, I sent it to those in charge at Sootoday.com and this morning I've been fielding calls from readers across Canada telling me "you're in Sootoday".

Amazing.  Here's how it reads:

"There’s a brand new all Canadian music show on tour in Ontario next month.  CBC TV Country Music Stars will appear at The Loft (Algoma Conservatory of Music) on June 4, 2025.  Sponsoring the Sault show is the Northern Ontario Country Music Association.

As the voice of the nation, the CBC is the obvious ribbon that ties this show together but its the songs, stories and personalities on stage that give the show a definite Sault Ste. Marie flavour and we have Hall of Fame DJ Don Ramsay to thank for that.

Two local performers, Donna Ramsay (Donna and LeRoy) and Duncan Fremlin (Whiskey Jack) will headline the lineup of stars.  As cast members on the CBC’s Tommy Hunter show, these two award winning performers and their musical partners, LeRoy Anderson and Douglas John Cameron, will lead the fans through a program dominated by memories and songs about the Soo.  Duncan’s long time role as Stompin’ Tom’s musical side kick will add a timely “Canada Is Not For Sale” theme.

Many local residents remember “daughter Donna” singing on local TV in the 1950’s with the likes of Bill Haight and fiddler, Fred Kent, both members of the Northern Ontario Country Music Hall of Fame.
The man who made all of this happen, beginning in 1941, was singer, producer, Disc Jockey and promoter, Don Ramsay.  For decades, Don’s voice dominated the local airwaves and from 1956 to 1959, daughter Donna sang with the band on her dad’s weekly program on CJIC-TV, Down Yonder Ranch.

The TV signal barely reached Laird hill in the 1950’s but when it did, Duncan Fremlin tuned in on the family’s 14” black and white television to watch Donna and the band.  At that time, Duncan was making a name for himself each year at the Kiwanis Music Festival.  He was clearly destined for the bigger stage.

On June 4 at The Loft, Donna will sing Saddle Tramp, the song she wrote for her dad.  She included a reference to Down Yonder Ranch’s signature song, Suppertime by 1950’s Nashville star, Jimmy Davis.  As it turns out,  Duncan also wrote a song about Don, Come Home  and it too cites that song.

As Duncan said, “growing up on Pumpkin Point Road in the 1950’s, the radio was always on and no one could begin to eat supper until Jimmy Davis finished that song and somebody said Grace.”

Nostalgia will be front and centre at the Loft that night and tears and laughter will undoubtedly follow."

A reunion of cast members of The Tommy Hunter Show…. and guests. Presented by the stars who “were there”!

In 2025, country duo Donna and LeRoy and country/bluegrass band Whiskey Jack, all veterans of the CBC’s Tommy Hunter Show, will join forces for a trip down memory lane in theatres across Ontario.

Legends of Canadian Country Music TV features Hall of Famers (on both sides of the border), Donna and LeRoy.  For 17 years they appeared on North America’s premiere country television show, the CBC’s Tommy Hunter Show.
Donna Ramsay is the real deal with a TV career dating back to 1957 when she began to sing on a local country music show in her hometown of Sault Ste. Marie (CJIC-TV). That morphed into appearances across North America, the highlight being The Don Messer Show.  With a new record contract in hand, she met another young star, Alberta’s LeRoy Anderson. It wasn’t long before the newly married couple were spotted by Tommy Hunter and as they say, the rest is history.

Each week to an audience of millions of fans, they’d sing with Tommy and the stars of the day, Loretta Lynn, Johnny Cash, Gordon Lightfoot, Glen Campbell, George Jones and more.

CBC TV discovered Whiskey Jack early in their career with a feature appearance on Café Hibou in Ottawa.  An invite to join the cast of the Tommy Hunter Show soon followed. They hosted their own comedy segment, the “Ol’ Back Porch” and welcomed legends like Grandpa Jones, Gordie Tapp, Ray Stevens and more. It was all about laughs and songs. TV became their medium… Nashville Now, Alan Thicke Show, Ralph Emory, Fire on the Mountain and the big one, a Canada Day, 1993 TV appearance on Parliament Hill  described by Tom as “the show of lifetime.

After the Tommy Hunter Show went off the air, Whiskey Jack joined up with Stompin’ Tom Connors in the studio and on tour from 1993 to his death. Audiences will enjoy outrageous tales culled from Duncan’s best selling book, My Good Times With Stompin’ Tom, including Whiskey Jack’s very own Douglas John Cameron is no stranger to TV. For 10 years he starred on Treehouse TV resulting in a Juno nomination for song of the year.

Horseshoe Tavern Show - the day after

First, it was a wild night at the “Shoe”.  300+ fans was impressive but what was noticed by many was the youth of the crowd outnumbered the old geezers…and if that wasn't impressive enough, I rec'd this message from Bill Heffernan, a long time fan, with a bit of grey on his head, a man who knows what he speaks:

"I want to let you know that many of the audience certainly looked a whole lot like you and me ...BUT, there were many younger folks there too-- and they knew every word to all the Stompin' Tom songs. I also met former students who were just in high school when I was retiring, and teachers who are still teaching ..there still is hope Duncan,

And the highlight of the night for me, other than your whole show, was these  two gorgeous young women directly in my purview to the stage, who between them combined would be lucky to have 40 years of age knew not only every single Stompin' Tom song, but also knew every word to Wilf Carter's and jumped for joy when Doogie mentioned Gordie Lightfoots name in the introduction to Alberta Bound and then they sang along on every note ....

You are far more Captain Canada than Wayne Gretzky ever was or ever will be!

I don't buy into the Captain Canada moniker with Charlie Angus out there leading the way but I do confess to getting fired up by all this.  That had to have been the loudest  version of “Oh Canada” I've ever heard.  Thanks to Sean Cullen for his wit and for inspiring us all to stand and be heard.

New Music Columnist from Whiskey Jack Headquarters

In the late 1970’s, Jim Norris, the publisher of a new national magazine called Canadian Musician, asked if I'd be on a panel at the very first “business of music” seminar.  It was an honour to present to a large gathering of Canadian music professionals.  Here we are, almost 50 years later, and once again opportunity from Jim comes knocking.

Through his friend Eric Alper, two weeks ago, Jim Norris asked me to write a regular column for his new online newsletter, “Canadian Musician Spotlight”.

I said “yes” and here is the first of what hopefully will be many more popular and well read columns about life as a Canadian musician.  This one is about something I have some experience with…writing a book.

Our new song O L D is getting lots of attention

Whiskey Jack's new song, O L D (available here for free download) has been receiving a lot of praise and attention.  That's how good it is.  They're writing about it around the world.

It's even being charted in Canada's premier online radio network.  #2 and rising!!

The following media sites have done feature articles.

How is it with all this international media attention,  we're still not rich and we're not a household name. What's going on with that?

Drop Out Entertainment

Tinnitist

Radio and Music

Motherhood Moment Blog

The Kayden Gordon Show

Cashbox Canada

Other sites are administered from the US, India (yes, India) and England.

So far, we sang it live and were interviewed on the most important podcast in Canada, Toronto Mike.  Next up was a live performance and long interview on the most important terrestrial radio station in Canada, Zoomer Radio.   Last week, I spoke at great length to legendary newspaper reporter Lance Hornby (Post Media).  He's going to publish something special.

The thing is…we're not complaining.  The adventure has been great.  We've been working with Canada's foremost publicist, That Eric Alper.  He's a joy to speak with each day and he believes in Whiskey Jack and our song.

Whiskey Jack has liver spots but they don't play pickle ball....yet

We might sing about the O L D and we may have a few liver spots… but other than that, “people say we look good for our age”.   At least that's what we were told after our appearance on Zoomer Radio yesterday.

This week you can hear us on Toronto Mike'd (real talk podcast) and The Morning Zoom on Zoomer Radio

If you're tired of stuffing stockings with the same old stuff, click on the QR code in the body of this message and download our new song, O L D.   Do it now!  Play it loud and sing along.  It was our most popular song in 2024. Fans have been asking for it and yes, you can now find it on the streaming platforms….however…. we would thank you "a month of Sundays” if you would click on the QR code below and add it to your personal playlist.  It's a free download with the option to buy us a coffee and make a small donation.

The young fans hear the song and say, “my Dad would love that song, where can I find it?” and the older crowd says, “do you have a CD with O L D on it”?

Another great stocking-stuffer is my book, My Good Times With Stompin' Tom. I can't mail it to you before Christmas Day but It is available in select stores across the country.  Perfect Books on Elgin Street in Ottawa and Bearly Used Books in Parry Sound have emailed to tell me they have copies available.

Tuesday morning around 10:00 AM, Douglas and I will be performing O L D on the #1 podcast in the GTA (and perhaps Canada), Toronto Mike'd.   Then Thursday morning at 9:00 AM, we travel to west Toronto to guest on The Morning Zoom with hosts Andy and Jane.  We'll once again perform it live.  Both programs are available around the world.

Thank you Mike Boon and Moses Znaimer for being great supporters of our music.

Merry Christmas everyone.

Whiskey Jack's New Song is a Hit!

A busy 2024 has produced some thrills and spills (mostly thrills) but the biggest is undoubtedly audience reaction to our new song, I've Got The O L D.   This Douglas John Cameron original has touched a nerve.  This is what the audiences are saying:

Shelley wrote: “I was just wondering if there is any way I can get the song “O L D” I believe that is the name? My husband fell in love with this song”.

Then Sylvia wrote:  We were at your show in Picton. It was so entertaining. We loved it so much. Look fwd to seeing you again sometime.
I’m looking fwd to hearing your new single. How exciting for you.
I was wondering if one of the songs you sang was on a cd I could buy?  It’s my husband’s 75 Birthday party celebration next Saturday and thought it would make a great addition to the celebration to be able to play that song. I’m looking for the O L D song. We were laughing all through the song especially another new knee. We both had knee replacements earlier this year."

The official release is the week of December 15, 2024.  We have visits lined up to sing the song in the studios of Zoomer Radio, Toronto Mike'd Podcast and more.
